How our paycheck calculators work
Each state calculator uses the same core math — 2026 federal income tax brackets, Social Security at 6.2% up to the $168,600 wage base, Medicare at 1.45% (plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax over $200,000 single / $250,000 married) — and then layers on each state's specific income tax rules. For states with progressive brackets we apply marginal rates; for flat-rate states we apply the flat percentage; for the nine states with no income tax (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming), your state tax is exactly $0.
